The Juozas Miltinis Drama Theatre is one of Lithuania's most celebrated stage companies. Miltinis founded it after studying theatre in Paris in the 1930s and brought European modernist ideas — psychological realism, Chekhov, Beckett, the French avant-garde — to what was then a provincial backwater. The company built a remarkable reputation across the Soviet decades, partly because its ambition and European sensibility made it exceptional by any standard. The building sits in the city centre. Check the programme before visiting; performances are in Lithuanian but the company's work is worth attending even without the language if you follow the form.
