Grand Ducal Palace

The official residence of the Grand Duke is a Flemish Renaissance building from the 1570s, originally Luxembourg's town hall before it was upgraded to royal duty. The honour guard outside changes hourly and is one of the small free spectacles of the old town.

Guided tours run only in July and August, when the family is away on holiday at Berg or Fischbach. Tickets are released a few months in advance through the tourist office and sell out within days. The interior is a curious mix of original Renaissance carving, restrained 19th-century state rooms, and the more comfortable apartments redone after the war.

A story
The Nazis used the palace as a tavern and concert hall during the occupation, gutting most of the original interior. The restoration that followed in the 1990s was so thorough that Grand Duke Jean reportedly told the architects he wanted to walk into rooms he had played in as a child — and he did.
