The main shopping streets are the Grand-Rue and the Rue Philippe II in the old town, running between Place d'Armes and the Royal Palace — a tight cluster of upmarket international brands. For everyday shopping the pedestrian Avenue de la Gare in the lower town has the cheaper chains.
The big city-centre department store is Galeries Lafayette on the Grand-Rue. For local food and produce, the Wednesday and Saturday morning market on Place Guillaume is the place — long-established cheese, charcuterie, and bread stalls, with growers from across the Grand Duchy.
Luxembourg's signature shopping draws are wine (the Moselle valley, an hour east, is the source) and pastries (Oberweis, Namur). Many city-centre shops close at lunchtime on weekdays.
