Philharmonie Luxembourg

The Philharmonie on Place de l'Europe is one of Europe's better mid-sized concert halls, with acoustics by Albert Yaying Xu that have been praised by every visiting orchestra. The 2005 building, by Christian de Portzamparc, is itself worth a visit — a great rectangular volume wrapped in a forest of slender white columns.

The Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg is in residence, but the programme also includes jazz, electronic, and world music. Tickets are a fraction of what comparable seats cost in Paris or Berlin.

A story
Christian de Portzamparc's design encases the concert hall in a colonnade of 823 slender white columns. The original sketch was meant to evoke a Greek temple, but architects working on the site renamed it 'the porcupine' — and the nickname has stuck with the public.
