Demir Kapija is a small town in southern Macedonia, where the Vardar River squeezes through the Iron Gate gorge. The town itself is quiet, but the setting is strong: limestone cliffs, caves, old tracks through the canyon, and vineyards that make this one of the country's better wine stops.
It earns its place as more than a highway pause because the attractions stack well. You can walk into the Demir Kapija Canyon, look for the remains of Prosek, visit Bela Voda Cave, then finish with a tasting above town at Popova Kula.
Come with a car if you can. Trains and buses exist, but the best part of Demir Kapija is the landscape just outside the streets, not the town grid.
