Kratovo

Small Macedonian crater town of stone bridges, medieval towers, and volcanic countryside.

Kratovo is a small town with a setting that does half the work for it. It sits in the bowl of an extinct volcano in northeastern Macedonia, where steep lanes, stone bridges, and old towers step up the slopes.

The town is compact, but it has a real identity. Kratovo old town is the main sight, with bridges crossing the gullies and surviving towers from the town's mining and trading past. A short drive away, the Stone Town of Kuklica adds a strange volcanic landscape of earth pillars, while Lesnovo Monastery gives the region one of its best medieval church interiors.

Kratovo is not a polished city break. It is a strong one-day detour for travelers who like old stone towns, rough edges, and places where the landscape explains the architecture.
