Palazzo Capua

Early 19th-century neoclassical palace, one of Sliema's oldest surviving buildings

One of the few pre-modern buildings to survive Sliema's development boom, Palazzo Capua is an early 19th-century neoclassical palace that stands as evidence of the grander vision once held for this stretch of coast. Built for the noble Capua family, it is now converted to private use, but the facade is striking enough to justify a detour: clean classical lines, balconied windows, and the kind of confident proportions that the apartment blocks surrounding it thoroughly lack.

The palace sits on the promenade strip near the Strand, and passing it you get a sense of what the Sliema seafront might have looked like had the 20th century been kinder to it. It is not open to the public, but is easily seen from the street.
