Sliema Waterfront Promenade

Multi-kilometre seafront walk with views across Marsamxett Harbour to Valletta

The promenade along Triq ix-Xatt — locally just called "the front" — stretches from the Tigné peninsula in the north to the ferry terminal near the Strand, with uninterrupted views across Marsamxett Harbour to the honey-coloured bastions of Valletta. It is best at sunset, when the light turns the fortifications gold and the harbour fills with silhouettes of the ferries crossing back and forth.

The walk is entirely flat and suitable for all ages. Along the way there are cafes, benches, fishing spots, and rocky access points into the sea. The northern section near Tigné is wider and less busy; the southern section approaching the ferry terminal is lined with restaurant terraces and is the busier, livelier stretch.

A story
The Sliema waterfront was developed in the 19th century when British officers and Maltese merchants began building summer villas here, away from the crowded density of Valletta. Most of those villas are long gone, replaced by apartment blocks in the 1960s and 70s, but the promenade they created along the water's edge remains.
