Stella Maris Parish Church

Sliema's main parish church, built in neoclassical style and dedicated to Our Lady of the Sea

The principal parish church of Sliema, dedicated to Our Lady of the Star of the Sea, stands on the high ground just back from the promenade. Its neoclassical facade and twin campaniles are a Sliema landmark, and the interior has the ornate confidence typical of Maltese parish churches — gilded altars, paintings, and a ceiling decorated in the baroque tradition.

The church was built in the early 20th century as Sliema grew from a summer retreat into a full town. It remains the spiritual centre of the community and holds regular services. The church square in front is a pleasant spot to sit in the late afternoon, when the stone catches the warm light.
