River Gate (Vrata od Škurde)

The River Gate, also called the North Gate, opens onto the small Škurda river that runs along the northern edge of the old town. It is by far the quietest of the three gates — many cruise day-trippers never see it — and one of the prettiest, with the river running underneath an old stone bridge and the city walls rising behind.

The gate carries a relief commemorating the 1657 defence of the city against an Ottoman force of 5,000 men. Just outside, the Škurda runs into the bay through a sluice gate that powered an old mill — you can still see the millstones lying in the grass. Step out for a moment of quiet away from the main lanes.
