Sveti Stefan

Montenegrin coastal village facing a fortified island joined to shore by a narrow sandy causeway

Sveti Stefan is the most photographed spot in Montenegro — a turreted medieval village on a small island, connected to the shore by a narrow sandy causeway, with pink-sand beaches on both sides. If you've seen a postcard of Montenegro, this is probably it.

Since 2007 the island itself has been operated as a private luxury hotel by Aman Resorts (Aman Sveti Stefan). Access is restricted to hotel guests. The entry fee that used to allow day visitors to walk around the village is no longer available — the whole island is private.

What remains for non-guests is still excellent: the two beaches flanking the causeway (Miločer and Sveti Stefan beach) are among the best on the coast, with clear water, fine sand, and the island as a backdrop. Miločer beach to the south, sheltered by pine trees, is especially good. There are cafes and restaurants on the mainland promenade.

Sveti Stefan is about 6km south of Budva. Buses run regularly, or it's a pleasant 30-minute walk along the coastal path from Budva via Pržno.

Beaches

The two beaches flanking the causeway are the main reason to come. Sveti Stefan beach to the north is the longer and busier of the two, with fine pale sand and the island village as a backdrop — one of the most photogenic beach scenes on the Adriatic. Miločer beach to the south is smaller, more sheltered, and shaded by pines, which makes it cooler in the afternoon heat.

Both beaches charge an entry fee in summer; you can rent sunbeds or bring your own towel and find a spot on the free sections. The water is clear and the swimming is good. Come early in July and August — by midday the beaches fill up fast with day-trippers from Budva.

Getting There

Sveti Stefan is about 6km south of Budva, the closest town with real transport connections. Local buses run frequently along the coastal road and stop at Sveti Stefan — the journey from Budva takes around 15 minutes. The same buses continue south to Petrovac.

The nearest airports are Tivat (around 30km north) and Podgorica (around 75km inland). Taxis from Tivat take about 40 minutes; from Podgorica allow 90 minutes. Bus connections from Podgorica require a change in Budva.

From Budva, the coastal path is a pleasant 30-minute walk to Sveti Stefan — flat, well-maintained, and with good views of the coast along the way. In summer a water taxi also connects Budva beach with the Sveti Stefan area.
