Tivat

Bay of Kotor town where a former naval base has become Montenegro's glossy marina quarter.

Tivat sits on the gentler, sunnier side of the Bay of Kotor, without Kotor's walled drama or Perast's baroque theatre. For a long time it was the practical town of the bay: airport, naval base, ferry road, local waterfront. Then the old Yugoslav military yard was remade as Porto Montenegro, and Tivat acquired a glossy marina district almost overnight.

That contrast is the town's main interest. Around Porto Montenegro, superyachts, designer shops, and polished stone quays can feel imported from a different coastline. A few minutes away, the Pine Embankment, Kalimanj harbour, and Donja Lastva return you to the quieter rhythm of the bay: fishing boats, coffee terraces, church bells, and families walking at dusk.

Tivat is also the easiest base in the bay for logistics. The airport is on the edge of town, buses run toward Kotor, Budva, and Herceg Novi, and the Luštica peninsula is close enough for beaches and coves. The Tivat Salt Pans add a surprising birdwatching stop within minutes of the resort strip.

Use Tivat if you want comfort and access rather than medieval romance. It is not the most atmospheric town in Boka, but it is convenient, increasingly confident, and more varied than the marina brochures suggest.
