Amersfoort's central position in the Netherlands makes it a good base for day trips. Utrecht is just ten minutes away by train and deserves a full day. The Veluwe — the largest forested area in the Netherlands — starts just east of the city and is excellent for cycling and walking; Apeldoorn gives access to the national park and Het Loo Palace. Arnhem is an hour by train and has the Open Air Museum as well as the Airborne Museum at Oosterbeek. Kamp Amersfoort, the former concentration camp near Leusden on the southern edge of the city, is a sobering but important visit for understanding the Dutch experience of World War II.
