Diever is an old village on the edge of the Drents-Friese Wold national park in Drenthe, in the north of the Netherlands. The village has old farms, a medieval church, a smock windmill, and just outside it a hunebed — one of the megalithic dolmens that are Drenthe's most distinctive ancient monuments, built around 3400 BC.
The surrounding woods and heathland of the Drents-Friese Wold are excellent for cycling and walking, with trails that wind through the national park for hours. The heather blooms purple in late August, one of the finest sights in the northern Netherlands.
In summer, the Shakespearetheater Diever performs Shakespeare plays in an outdoor forest theatre, in Dutch, to audiences of 20,000 people a season. The festival has been running since 1946 and draws visitors from across the country to this otherwise quiet village. Book tickets in advance.
