Blokhuispoort

A former state prison converted, since 2014, into a cultural complex: bookshop, library, café, small theatre, and a warren of design studios and workshops. The brick prison block went up in stages from 1499 onward; the high outer wall and double iron gates still feel forbidding from the outside.

The conversion is one of the more successful adaptive reuses in the north. Wander the courtyards, browse Boekhandel Van der Velde in the old chapel, have a coffee in the central café and watch the city's design students at work. Free entry; ask for the leaflet about the building's history at the desk.

A story
Mata Hari was held briefly in the Blokhuispoort prison before being transferred onward in her espionage case. Plaques in the courtyard mark cells of several notable prisoners.
