Marken is surrounded by the IJmeer rather than open sea, and its shoreline is mostly dyke and marshy edge rather than sandy beach. Swimming is possible in calm weather but is not the main reason to visit. The dyke walk gives good water views; sailing and windsurfing on the IJmeer are popular in summer. Boats can be moored at the small marina.
