The most atmospheric way to reach Marken is by passenger ferry from Volendam, a 30-minute crossing across the IJmeer that runs from April through October. Ferries leave regularly from the Volendam harbour. Check the seasonal timetable before relying on this route, as frequency drops outside peak summer.
By road, Marken is connected to the mainland via a 10-kilometre causeway built in 1957. Bus 315 runs from Amsterdam Centraal Station via Monnickendam to Marken and is the practical option in winter or when the ferry is not running. From Amsterdam the journey takes about 50 minutes. If you are coming from Volendam by road, the drive takes around 20 minutes.
There is a car park near the entrance to the village. Cars are not allowed into the historic centre — the island is best explored on foot.
