May, June and September are the most pleasant months — mild, often sunny, with fewer day-trippers than July and August. Summer weekends are busy with coach tours from Amsterdam. Spring is particularly attractive when the surrounding polders are in full tulip bloom. Winter is quiet and grey; most tourist facilities close, though the village itself is unchanged and worth seeing without the crowds.
Marken has no major festivals of its own — the island is too small and too observantly Protestant in character for that. King's Day on 27 April brings colourful activity to all nearby towns, including Amsterdam and Volendam, both easily reached from here.
