Volendam is the obvious companion trip — a ferry runs between the two villages and makes the combination easy. Edam, three kilometres inland from Volendam, has its famous cheese market (Thursdays in summer) and a well-preserved historic centre. Zaanse Schans, about 30 km west, has the region's best concentration of working windmills. All three are accessible from Marken in a day.
