De Taanderij

Waterfront terrace restaurant at the harbour, known for smoked eel

The most established of the harbour-side restaurants, De Taanderij occupies a traditional building right on the waterfront with a terrace that looks out over the boats. The kitchen leans heavily on local tradition: smoked eel is the signature dish, served with brown bread and mustard in the time-honoured way. In summer the terrace fills with day-trippers from Amsterdam and Volendam; arrive early or expect a wait.

The interior is warm and unpretentious, with fishing nets and old photographs on the walls. Besides eel, the menu runs to pickled herring, mussels, and straightforward Dutch mains. Prices are in line with what you'd expect at a tourist destination, which is to say slightly elevated — but the waterfront setting earns it.
