The Volendams Museum at Zeestraat 41 traces the history of the town through two defining obsessions: fishing and fashion. The star exhibits are the full sets of traditional Volendam dress — the pointed lace caps, the striped skirts, the elaborate bodices — displayed with enough context to explain when and why they were worn, not merely as a colourful curiosity. For women the costume varied by occasion: daily wear, Sunday dress, and the full ceremonial outfit worn at Easter are all distinct.
Upstairs, a remarkable photo archive charts the parade of famous visitors who came from the late 19th century onwards. Volendam attracted artists, photographers, and later tourists looking for an unchanged Dutch past. The collection documents a century of that gaze, from serious academic painters to early 20th-century postcard photographers. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–5pm; admission around €5.
