Walburgiskerk

Zutphen's main church, a towering Gothic building that dominates the town skyline. The church dates from the 11th century in its earliest parts, with major expansions in the 14th and 15th centuries. The interior is notable for its medieval wall paintings — among the best-preserved in the Netherlands — and the astronomical clock, as well as the famous Librije housed in an adjacent chapter room.

The tower can be climbed for views over the town and the IJssel valley. The church sits on a raised mound in the centre of Zutphen, suggesting it was built on an even older sacred site. Free to enter (the Librije is a separate guided visit).
