The Hurtigruten is the coastal voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, calling at 34 ports along the way — a working postal and freight route since 1893 that has become one of the great ways to see Norway's coast. The full round trip takes 12 days; most travellers take one leg only, north or south, or book a shorter port-to-port stretch.
Book a cabin with a window if you can afford it — much of the value of the trip is simply watching the coast go by, and for long stretches there's land or islands on both sides rather than open sea. The route runs year-round: summer brings the midnight sun above the Arctic Circle and the best chance of calm water for the fjord detours; winter brings the northern lights, storms worth watching from a warm lounge, and a completely different, starker version of the same coastline.
