Housed in one of the surviving original buildings of the LKAB mining company, Museum Nord – Narvik tells the story of the town from the founding of the iron-ore port in 1887 through the construction of the Ofotbanen, the company-town years, and the postwar reconstruction. It is a smaller, more local cousin to the Narvik War Museum and well worth an hour for visitors interested in the industrial history that explains why a town exists this far north.
There are reconstructed worker's cottages, photographs of the chaotic shanty-town that grew up around the original railhead, and equipment from the early mining and shipping era. The same ticket covers the museum's outlying buildings around the harbour.
