Fredskapellet (Peace Chapel)

A small wooden chapel built as a war memorial above the town

Built in 1949 on a wooded hillside above Narvik, Fredskapellet — the Peace Chapel — is a simple, single-room wooden church that doubles as a memorial to those who died in the 1940 battles. The interior is austere: white-painted walls, a small altar with a carved Christ figure, and a wall of plaques recording the names of fallen Norwegian, British, French and Polish soldiers.

The chapel is a short uphill walk from the town centre and the route up passes the Allied war cemetery of Håkvik, a quiet open space with rows of identical white headstones from a dozen nations. Open hours are limited; check at the tourist office.
