Narvik Church

The wooden parish church near the town centre, one of the few buildings to survive the wartime bombing

Built in 1925 in a restrained neo-Gothic style and largely of timber, Narvik kirke is the parish church for the town and an unexpected survivor: it was one of very few central buildings to come through the 1940 bombing largely intact. The white-painted nave seats around 600 and has a five-pointed star window above the altar by the local artist Aage Storstein.

The church is on Kirkegata, a short walk from the main square; it is open most weekday afternoons in summer and for services year-round. Look for the small chapel inside dedicated to merchant seamen lost in the war.
