Standing directly beside Nidaros Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace is the oldest secular building in Scandinavia still in use. Construction began in the twelfth century when Trondheim was the ecclesiastical centre of the entire North Atlantic world. Today it houses several exhibitions, including a display of medieval sculpture from the cathedral's restoration and a military museum tracing Norwegian history from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.
