Vår Frue Church

Twelfth-century stone church on the city's main pedestrian street

A small medieval stone church right on the central pedestrian street, easy to walk past without noticing but worth a few minutes inside. The oldest parts date from around 1200, making it one of the few buildings in central Trondheim to predate the 1681 fire. The plain whitewashed interior is reused as a daytime drop-in centre for the city's homeless and addicted, a use that has earned the church a quiet reputation in Norway for its social mission.

The site has been a place of worship since the eleventh century. Open to visitors most weekdays; the church holds a daily community lunch open to anyone who walks in.
