Café Noworolski

Grand café in the arcades of the Cloth Hall, open since 1910 under coffered ceilings

Café Noworolski occupies the arcade of the Cloth Hall on the Main Market Square and has been in more or less continuous operation since 1910. Its Art Nouveau interior — intact glass cases, marble tabletops, gilded mirrors, and a long pastry counter — makes it one of the most atmospheric cafes in Poland, and the view through the arcade windows to the square and St. Mary's Basilica beyond is one of the classic Krakow perspectives.

Come for the setting as much as the coffee, which is good though not exceptional, and for the cake — the poppy seed rolls, apple strudel, and honey cake are all made in-house. Prices are higher than elsewhere in the city, which is partly what you pay for the location. In summer, tables extend into the arcade itself; in winter the interior fills with a mix of tourists and older Krakow residents for whom Noworolski is a Thursday afternoon institution going back decades.
