Jama Michalika

Legendary literary café on Floriańska Street, its Art Nouveau interior intact since 1895

A legendary literary cafe on Florianska Street, its windowless interior — the name means Michalik's Cave — designed in full Art Nouveau style. It remains a working cafe and a small museum of Krakow's bohemian past; come for coffee and the famous cakes rather than a full meal, and to sit among the original fittings.

A story
Opened in 1895, the cafe became the haunt of the Mloda Polska (Young Poland) artists and the home of the Zielony Balonik cabaret; patrons who could not pay their bills settled them with drawings, and the dim, Secession-style rooms are still hung with their caricatures and puppets.
