Klezmer Hois

Jewish Galician restaurant in a former mikvah on Szeroka Street with nightly klezmer music

Klezmer Hois occupies a former mikvah (ritual bathhouse) at Szeroka 6, in the heart of Kazimierz, and serves traditional Galician Jewish cuisine: cholent, gefilte fish, matzo ball soup, and the various stewed and pickled dishes that formed the everyday diet of the Ashkenazi community that lived in this quarter for centuries. The dining rooms keep their old furniture and faded photographs, giving the place a lived-in, unstaged feel that's rare on a street with several more theatrical competitors.

Live klezmer music plays most evenings, drawing a mix of tourists and locals rather than a purely tour-bus crowd. It works as a sit-down dinner or just a coffee and a slice of cake at the attached café. Reservations are worth making on weekends, when the small dining rooms fill quickly.
