Church of Saints Apostles Peter and Paul

First fully Baroque church in Kraków, built by the Jesuits between 1597 and 1619

Krakow's first fully Baroque church, built for the Jesuits between 1597 and 1619, modelled on the Gesu in Rome. Its dome and broad facade dominate Grodzka Street, the medieval route between the Main Square and Wawel. The crypt holds the tomb of Piotr Skarga, the influential Jesuit preacher, and the acoustics make it a regular venue for chamber-music concerts.

A story
The church is fronted by twelve stone statues of the apostles on the railing along Grodzka Street, carved in the early 18th century. Inside hangs Poland's longest Foucault pendulum, 46 metres, which is set swinging in public demonstrations to show the rotation of the Earth.
