Stary Browar

Stary Browar — Old Brewery — is one of the most intelligent urban regeneration projects in Central Europe. A 19th-century beer factory on Półwiejska Street was converted between 1998 and 2007 into a mixed-use complex that combines high-end retail with a functioning contemporary art centre, preserving the industrial brick architecture throughout. The result is genuinely beautiful: red-brick brewery buildings connected by glass galleries, centred on a landscaped courtyard that functions as a public square.

The art centre hosts serious exhibitions in rotating gallery spaces distributed through the complex. The shopping is premium but not exclusively so — there is a good food hall in the basement, and the cafe terraces in the courtyard are popular on summer afternoons. Whether you shop here or not, the building is worth visiting for its architecture and the quality of the public space. It sits about 15 minutes' walk south of the Old Market Square.

A story
The Stary Browar won the ICSC award for the best shopping centre in the world in 2005 — beating malls from the United States, Asia, and across Europe. The jury cited the integration of a functioning contemporary art space with the commercial centre, something that had not been done before at this scale. The art programme continues today and is taken seriously: works are commissioned from major artists, not just acquired for decoration.
