Poznan is a pilgrimage destination for steam railway enthusiasts. Regular steam services run from Poznan to Wolsztyn, about 72 kilometres southwest, on one of the last scheduled steam-hauled railway lines in Europe. The Wolsztyn locomotive depot maintains a fleet of working steam engines, and you can arrange footplate rides alongside the crew. Even if you are not a trainspotter, the sight and sound of a full-size steam locomotive pulling out of the station is genuinely thrilling.
Services run several times a week; check the PKP timetable or the Wolsztyn locomotive depot website for current schedules before planning a trip. The journey takes around 90 minutes each way and passes through flat agricultural countryside. Wolsztyn itself is a pleasant small town worth an hour or two. The locomotive depot holds an annual steam parade in spring, drawing enthusiasts from across Europe.
