Szamotuły

Small Greater Poland town near Poznań with a castle museum, Halszka legend, and Gothic churches.

Szamotuły is a small town northwest of Poznań, close enough by train to make an easy half-day or slow day trip. It is not a grand old city, but it has a tidy cluster of sights: a castle museum, a late-Gothic tower wrapped in a dark local legend, and two churches that show how deep medieval Greater Poland runs.

The main reason to come is Górka Castle Museum, where the castle complex includes Halszka Tower and one of the region's more memorable stories of forced marriage and imprisonment. The museum's icon collection gives the visit more substance than the castle exterior alone would suggest.

Nearby, the Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Consolation and St. Stanislaus and the Franciscan Monastery and Holy Cross Church round out a compact walk. Szamotuły is best for travelers who have already seen Poznań's big sights and want a smaller, older town with a real local story.

Getting There

Regional and longer-distance trains link Szamotuły with Poznań, usually in about half an hour. This is the simplest way to visit, since the town is small and the main sights are walkable once you arrive.

Drivers approach from Poznań on regional roads toward the northwest. A car is useful if you are combining Szamotuły with villages, forests, or lakes farther out in Greater Poland, but it is not needed for the town itself.
