The Turnul Negru is the smaller cousin of the White Tower — a chunky stone watchtower on a rocky outcrop just above the city walls. It was built in 1494 and acquired its name in 1559 when a lightning strike set it ablaze and blackened the masonry. A glass pyramid roof was added in 2001.
Inside, a small permanent exhibition covers Brasov's medieval defences. The terrace outside has another good rooftop view, lower and closer to the old town than from the White Tower. Combine the two and the connecting stretch of wall for an easy hour's walk.
