Mount Tampa rises straight out of the back of the old town, forested up to its summit at 960 metres. A cable car runs to the top from a station behind Strada Castelului — three minutes up, every quarter hour. Or you can walk: the most popular route is the zigzag path from behind the Black Church, an hour each way through beech and oak forest.
The view from the top takes in the whole old town and the surrounding plain, with the Bucegi mountains in the distance on a clear day. The summit also has the giant Hollywood-style BRASOV sign visible from the city below. Brown bears occasionally appear on the lower slopes, especially in autumn — keep to the marked paths.
