First Romanian School Museum

Museum in the building where Romanian was first taught and printed

The small museum beside St Nicholas Church preserves the rooms where, in 1495, the first known school in the Romanian language was opened. In the following century the priest Deacon Coresi set up a printing press here and produced the first books in Romanian — the New Testament in 1561, a Psalter in 1570, and a catechism — all of which can be seen in cases in the upper rooms.

The collection of medieval manuscripts is small but unexpected: a 15th-century cherry-wood lectern, an Arabic gospel given to the church by a 17th-century patriarch of Jerusalem, illuminated psalters. Allow about thirty minutes; signage is partly in English.
