Hanu' lui Manuc

19th-century caravanserai turned restaurant in the Old Centre

Address Strada Franceză 62-64, Bucharest

Built in 1808 by an Armenian merchant called Manuc, this is the largest surviving caravanserai in Bucharest — a two-storey rectangular building wrapped around an enormous wooden-balconied courtyard. It has been many things in its 200 years: travellers' inn, hotel, brothel, theatre. Today it is a restaurant where in summer the entire courtyard fills with tables under the lime trees.

The food is solid traditional Romanian and Wallachian, the wine list focuses on Romanian producers, and the prices are fair given the setting. The interior dining rooms are panelled and warm in winter. It is touristy, but the architecture is so unusual and so well preserved that it earns its visits. Live music on weekend evenings.
