The Acvariul din Constanța sits on the seafront next to the Casino, in a low pavilion overlooking the rocks. It is one of the oldest aquaria in Eastern Europe — opened in 1958 — and shows its age, but the collection is genuinely interesting: a focus on Black Sea, Danube delta and freshwater Romanian species rather than the generic tropical fish you find in most European aquariums.
The tanks of beluga sturgeon are the highlight — these huge slow-moving fish were almost extinct in the wild and the captive breeding programme here is one of the few sources for restocking. A second hall covers tropical species. Allow forty-five minutes; useful for a wet day or with children.
