Folk Art Museum

Restored Tomis-era municipal building with a strong collection of Dobruja textiles and ceramics

The Muzeul de Artă Populară ("Folk Art Museum") occupies a late 19th-century townhouse on Bulevardul Tomis and holds one of the country's best collections of folk material from the Dobruja region — the historically multi-ethnic plain between the Danube and the sea, home to Romanians, Bulgarians, Turks, Tatars, Lipovan Russians and others.

The exhibits run to traditional costume, kilims and woven rugs, painted ceramic, wood carving and the long agricultural tools of the Dobruja plains. The Lipovan room — covering the Old Believer community of the Danube delta, with its distinctive house types and dress — is particularly rewarding. Allow forty-five minutes.
