The Biserica cu Lună is the church that gives Union Square its peculiar landmark. Built between 1784 and 1790 in a blend of late Baroque and neoclassical styles, it served the city's Romanian Orthodox community at a time when Oradea was still firmly under Habsburg control. The interior is restrained for the period — gilded iconostasis, painted vault, a few large icons in the Romanian tradition — but the real attraction is on the outside.
The mechanism that powers the rotating moon globe sits inside the tower and has been restored several times without ever being replaced; it still runs on the original gearing. If you stand in the square in the late afternoon you can occasionally hear the mechanism turning over.
