Lena Pillars

The Lena Pillars are the standout natural sight of the Sakha Republic, a wall of sandstone columns lining the upper Lena River around 200 km upstream from Yakutsk. In summer they are reached by river cruise — typically a two to three day round trip from the city — and the boat moors at the foot of the cliffs so passengers can climb to viewpoints above.

In winter the river freezes and the columns can be reached by car or snowmobile across the ice. The light at sunrise and sunset turns the rock pink and orange, and the silence on the river is total.

A story
The Lena Pillars are a UNESCO World Heritage site, a 40-kilometre wall of vertical rock columns up to 100 metres tall rising directly from the river. They are the eroded remains of a Cambrian-era reef system, around 540 million years old, and the cliffs have been a sacred place for the local Sakha and Evenki peoples for thousands of years.
