Mammoth Museum

The Mammoth Museum at North-Eastern Federal University is one of the few places in the world dedicated entirely to the woolly mammoth and the ice age megafauna of Beringia. The Sakha Republic's permafrost has preserved astonishing specimens, and many of them end up on the tables of this small but important research collection.

Expect tusks, skulls, mummified body parts, and the occasional full skeleton, alongside reconstructions and explanations of the science. It is modest in scale but the material is genuinely extraordinary. Combine it with a visit to the Permafrost Kingdom for the full extinct-Siberia experience.

A story
The permafrost of the Sakha Republic has yielded more frozen mammoth carcasses than anywhere else on earth. The museum's centrepiece is a mummified specimen so well preserved that researchers were able to extract intact muscle tissue and even liquid blood — a discovery that sparked serious discussions about cloning.
