Lietava Castle is a large ruined hilltop fortress south of Zilina, reached by a walk through the countryside. Its broken walls, towers, and exposed position make it one of the more rewarding castle outings in the region.
The site is best for travellers who want a hike with history attached. Bring water and time, because the pleasure is not only the ruins but the approach: fields, forest, and widening views as the castle comes into sight.
