Strecno Castle rises above the Vah valley east of Zilina, a compact ruin with the kind of position castles were built for: control of the river corridor, wide views, and a steep approach that still makes you work a little. It is one of the easiest heritage excursions from the city.
The visit is as much about the landscape as the masonry. From the walls you can see the river, road, railway, and wooded hills all squeezed through the same passage, which makes the strategic value immediately obvious. Go in clear weather if you can.
