Mariánske námestie is the heart of Žilina's old town — an arcaded Renaissance square dating from the 16th century that is one of the finest in the region. The uniform three-storey arcade that lines three sides of the square was built after a major fire and gives the space a satisfying architectural coherence that many Slovak market towns lack.
The square is lively without being touristy: local cafes fill the arcaded ground floors, the Saturday market occupies the centre, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral sits at the northern end with its imposing Baroque tower. In the evenings the square fills with locals, particularly in summer. The surrounding streets — Bottova, Farská, Národná — have more old houses and are pleasant to explore on foot.
