The upper Savinja River is one of the best whitewater rivers in Slovenia, especially in the section between Solčava and Ljubno ob Savinji. The river runs clear and cold from the alpine valleys and drops through a series of rapids that are challenging enough to be exciting but manageable for beginners with a guide.
Several operators in Ljubno ob Savinji run rafting trips throughout the summer season, typically half-day outings. Kayaking is also popular in this section. The lower reaches of the Savinja, where the river slows and broadens, are well-regarded for fly fishing — brown trout are the main quarry and the river has some of the cleanest water in the country. A fishing permit is required and can be obtained from local angling clubs.
