Velenje Coal Mining Museum

The Velenje Coal Mining Museum is one of the most distinctive museums in Slovenia — part of it is located underground inside the actual mine. Guided tours descend into the tunnels where miners worked for well over a century, and the experience of being underground while learning about the industry that built the city is genuinely compelling.

Above ground, the museum covers the history of coal extraction in the region and the social history of the planned town of Velenje that grew around the mine. Velenje itself is a fascinating piece of socialist urbanism — clean, functional, and with a castle perched on the hill above the modern town centre, giving it an incongruous medieval backdrop. The museum is open year-round; the underground tour is the main attraction and should be booked in advance in summer.

A story
Velenje was a socialist model city, built almost from scratch after World War II to house the workers of the Velenje coal mine — the largest underground mine in the former Yugoslavia. The city's main square still features the world's largest statue of Tito.
