Škofja Loka

Preserved medieval town below a castle, set where the Selca and Poljane Sora rivers meet.

Škofja Loka is one of Slovenia's loveliest old towns, close enough to Ljubljana for an easy day trip but with a different, more enclosed character. The town sits where the Selca and Poljane Sora rivers meet, with a castle above, bridges below, and a compact medieval centre that still feels like a real place rather than a museum set.

Start in the old town squares, then climb to Škofja Loka Castle for the view and the museum. The Capuchin Bridge is the classic crossing, while the Capuchin Monastery adds a literary and religious thread to the town's story.

Škofja Loka rewards slow wandering more than box-ticking. Walk into Puštal, look back at the castle, and if you have transport continue to Crngrob Church, one of the area's most atmospheric rural churches.

It makes a good counterpoint to Bled. Bled has the lake and the drama; Škofja Loka has stone lanes, river bends, painted facades, and the quieter confidence of a town that has been handsome for centuries.

Guide

Getting There

Škofja Loka is close to Ljubljana and Kranj, with regular bus connections making it straightforward as a day trip. The railway station is outside the old centre on the Ljubljana-Jesenice line, so check onward buses or be ready for a longer walk.

Driving is easy, but the medieval core is compact and not a place where you want a car. Park on the edge and explore the centre on foot.
